  • Harper advocates for religious freedom?Reuel S. Amdur
    July 24, 2013

I recently had an article about the persecution of the Muslim Rohingya minority in Burma published in the Seventh Day Adventist magazine Liberty. The editor tacked a note at the bottom of the article noting that the Canadian government has recently created an Office of Religious Freedom. He thought that that Office might want to pursue the matter.

  • Recovery, not cureReuel S. Amdur

In 1937, Albert Deutsch published Mental Illness in America, a history of the condition and its treatment. He noted that at the turn of the last century the mental health landscape was shaped by what he called the cult of cure. One institution after another boasted large numbers of cured patients. The cures were, of course, illusory. Cure is no longer the goal of treatment of mental illness.

Brent Rathgeber's resignation from the Tory caucus raises several issues. What does it mean for Harper's firm control over everything? What are the implications of what Rathgeber said about the Prime Minister's Office and the Duffy affair? And is control by party leaders in general too tight on caucus?

Two weeks ago, Muslims around the world celebrated the beginning of Ramadan, a month in the Islamic lunar calendar, which "shifts" eleven days earlier each year with respect to the Gregorian solar calendar.

  • Egypt's June 30: A popular uprising or a military coup?Dr. Mohamed Elmasry
    July 9, 2013

I am one of those millions of Egyptians who strongly believe that the youth-led movement Tamarrod (Rebel), that was calling peacefully, for weeks for an early presidential election, is not a military coup but a popular uprising. After Mohamed Morsi stubbornly refused citizen' reasonable demands, the army stepped in to preserve order. It is a classic legitimate step in the spirit of the true meaning of democracy and will be taught in political science classes the world over.

The shift in the premiership of Ontario from Dalton McGuinty to Kathleen Wynne provides reason for cautious optimism on the welfare front.

  • Where is Palestine?Reuel S. Amdur
    July 3, 2013

On May 15, the blog "Window into Palestine" carried a story about a Palestinian-Canadian who found a strange government form on the internet. The Canadian Adult Simplified Renewal Passport Application asked place of birth, and the answer was to be chosen from a drop-down menu. For Palestinians born in the West Bank, the entry was "West Bank of Jordan-Jordan."
