Simulating an Iranian attack on Israel - Why?Alan Hart

According to reports in Israeli newspapers, the U.S. and Israel are going to hold their largest ever joint military exercise in October, shortly before American voters decide whether to give Obama a second term in the White House or replace him with Mitt Romney. The exercise, involving thousands of soldiers and the most advanced anti-missile defense systems, will simulate simultaneous attacks from Iran and Syria.

Can you believe it? Dalton McGuinty is actually worse than Mike Harris. Harris cut Ontario Works (OW) social assistance rates by 21.6%, while leaving disability rates (ODSP) alone. Since then, there have been percentage increases in OW and ODSP for, but less than, increases in cost of living. The percentage has been the same for both. That means that the gap between the rates for the two is constantly increasing. It is no longer correct to refer to the 21.6% cut in Ontario Works as a misdeed to put on Mike Harris' shoulders. It has by now become McGuinty's baby.

Bob Stanfield has been called the greatest prime minister Canada never had. Some are now wanting to put Bob Rae's name into competition for the title. Well, maybe, maybe not. The impulse for hagiography comes from Rae's declaration that he will not be a candidate for the leadership of the Liberal Party, of which he is now interim leader. But what is his legacy? There is little question that he is one of the best, if not the best, orator in Parliament.

Dementia, particularly Alzheimer's, is a problem that increases as populations age. France and South Korea are two countries with aging populations who are taking measures to address the problem. There is no cure, but both countries are committing resources toward research and implementing policies to meet the needs of sufferers and their caregivers.

Beirut The Houla massacre has whipped up a new wave of outrage at the claimed brutality of Syria's government. Syrian envoys were kicked out of some Western capitals, more financial sanctions slapped on the regime in Damascus, and more furious demands are being made for a regime change toppling Bashar al-Assad and more calls for military intervention issued.

A group of nine Canadian senators has warned the United Church of Canada that it could spark a rift with the Jewish community if it approves the boycott of goods from Israeli settlements in occupied lands. One has to wonder how much concern these same senators have shown about the potential rift with other communities in Canada that face the prospect of boycotts, notwithstanding the justifications put forward.

Is the Netanyahu regime capable of responding humanely when an opportunity for accurate self-perception arrives? Recent events may provide the answer to this question that the corporate media would never dare ask. Israel, ostensibly a state built on the notion of asylum (at least for European Jews); is expressing outrage at the influx of illegal migrants into its sacred precincts. How ironic but yet, how fitting; considering Israel's established policy of expanding illegal settlements on the West Bank and in East Jerusalem.

I did spend more than 10 years doing research on designing microchips – called artificial neural networks (ANN) - which mimic how the human brain processes information. I published research papers on the subject and in 1994, I published my book Artificial Neural Networks Engineering. It was a fascinating subject and those research years were most enjoyable.

Islam saved Jewry. This is an unpopular, discomforting claim in the modern world. But it is a historical truth. The argument for it is double. First, in 570 CE, when the Prophet Mohammad was born, the Jews and Judaism were on the way to oblivion. And second, the coming of Islam saved them, providing a new context in which they not only survived, but flourished, laying foundations for subsequent Jewish cultural prosperity - also in Christendom - through the medieval period into the modern world.
