Let's talk today about "plausible deniability." The term apparently originated in the 1960s and referred at that time to CIA "black" operations.
As the Roman poet Juvenal put it, Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Who will watch the watchers themselves? We have the police to protect us, but we sometimes need protection from them as well. There have been a number of incidents in which people have been the victims. The most glaring and public of these get attention and sometimes appropriate action is taken. One thinks of the Toronto case of Sammy Yatim, shot by officer James Forcillo. Yatin was behaving in a bizarre fashion but was no immediate danger to anyone at the time. Forcillo was convicted.
Egypt's presidential election is due in the fall of 2011. Current president Hosni Mubarak, 81, will likely run again, although a less likely scenario has him going into retirement thus paving the way to his son Gamal, currently the General Secretary of the Policy Committee of the governing National Democratic Party.

On July 19, 2018, I was in the waiting area of the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre (IOCDC) to meet Claude, my client. A lawyer who was there to see another inmate and I struck up a conversation.

I encountered Paris and London three times, two times at a distance some 60 years ago as a boy growing up in Cairo, the first was a happy encounter in the early 1950s and the second was a sad one when the two capitals were involved in the invasion of Egypt in 1956. The third time was last week as a visitor to the two capitals.
