Let's face it: there is nothing to prevent a revered religious leader from being a jerk, and worse. That brings us to the most recent indecent stupidity from the mouth of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, leader of Israel's Sephardic ultra-Orthodox Jews and spiritual leader of Shas, their political party.
It's a battle for the soul of Judaism.
After the debacle of George W. Bush's two-term presidency and the election of Barack Obama, the U.S. conservative revolution ushered in by Ronald Reagan is becoming increasingly fragmented, disoriented and acrimonious.

After two packages from Yemen containing explosives were discovered recently, racial profiling of Muslims has reared its ugly head once again.
Queen's University professor of political philosophy Will Kymlicka identified two elements in racism, racist stereotypes and the view that "the others" are not really part of "us." The latter was supported by the results of a survey of opinion that he promoted. He spoke at an event sponsored by the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences.
It is just about certain that the new Republican House will hold hearings on the "radicalization of the American Muslim Community." The hearings will be called by Peter King, the Republican representative for New York's 3rd district, who is now the Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee.
Bob Stanfield has been called the greatest prime minister Canada never had. Some are now wanting to put Bob Rae's name into competition for the title. Well, maybe, maybe not. The impulse for hagiography comes from Rae's declaration that he will not be a candidate for the leadership of the Liberal Party, of which he is now interim leader. But what is his legacy? There is little question that he is one of the best, if not the best, orator in Parliament.
It is not easy being a teen these days, nor to be the parent of a teen. Parents cannot compare what being a teen was like when they were teenagers. A big difference is the incredible impact that the social media have today. Another factor is the massive growth in the available amount of knowledge, courtesy of Google. The world of today's young people is not our world, and we cannot understand how they experience it. As Kahlil Gibran put it, "You may house their bodies but not their souls. For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams."
Is a sick child a bogus refugee? That was a question raised by Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) pediatrician Dr. Tobey Audcent, on June 16, the third national day of action called by Canadian Doctors for Refugee Care. The event was a rally on Parliament Hill. Some 350 people gathered for the rally, including doctors, nurses, social workers, lawyers, and medical students. They were there to protest against the Harper government's cuts to health care for refugees and claimants.
