On July 24, 2012, Statistics Canada reported the rate of crimes reported to Canadian police forces in 2011 reached its lowest level since 1972. Since 1991, the rate of males charged with violent crime has dropped by 32% and the rate of women charged with violent crime has risen 34%. The severity of crime index, a tool used to measure the extent of serious crime in Canada, also dropped by 6 per cent.
There is currently a crisis in the funding of adequate representation for refugee claimants in Ontario and the rest of Canada. For years Ontario had one of the most generous, but still very limited, funding for representation of refugee claimants in Canada.

On December 15, 2012, the system for determining refugee claims made in Canada underwent significant changes as a result of the coming into force of the Balanced Refugee Reform Act and the Protecting Canada’s Immigration System Act, the latter of which amends both the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the Balanced Refugee Reform Act.
In 1967 the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), the Department of Employment and Immigration (predecessor of CIC and HRSDC) and the Secretary of State (predecessor of Canadian Heritage), and the Cabinet approved the creation of an international travel and exchange program. Since 1986, DFAIT has had the federal responsibility of managing the International Experience Canada (IEC) program.

October 16, 2013 is World Food Day. Four days before this event thousands took to streets across the World to protest the use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) products and pesticides that are suspected of being linked to diseases. The giant multi-national corporation Monsanto was one of the main targets of the protests. Over 50 countries took part in the March for World Food Day and in cities all across the United States and Canada.
On November 5, 2011, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) imposed a two year moratorium on new applications to sponsor parents or grandparents. A new option was provided where parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents could apply for the Parent and Grandparent Super Visa in order to visit Canada. This procedure would allow parents and grandparents to visit Canada for up to two years and the visa would be valid for ten years.[1]
