Ottawa's municipal election takes place on Monday, October 25. Dr. Akbar Manoussi shared his thoughts on the subject with Canadian Charger. He is a retired professor, 24 years at the University of Ottawa's School of Business and five years at Carleton University. He has been a provincial and federal candidate for the Green Party and has served as vice-president of Ottawa's Central Mosque.
A CSIS investigation which began in 2003, as a national security issue, has resulted in a Toronto area Imam being cleared of child pornography charges.
While much of the Toronto media has pretty much anointed councillor Rob Ford as the next Mayor of Toronto, the Canadian Charger interviewed Toronto's Ali Mallah to answer two questions: who it should endorse and why.
Newspaper redesigns often have an air of financial desperation about them. Cajoling readers with different fonts, layout, or paper size does little but add a transient sense of novelty that dissipates quickly. The Globe and Mail's latest attempt to tart itself up is particularly sad.
The Israeli cabinet has approved a draft amendment to the country's citizenship law, an amendment likely to pass the Knesset. It would require non-Jews wanting to become citizens to swear an oath to Israel as a "Jewish and democratic state." The requirement has several implications.
Now there are two. The United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) has landed a first contract for workers at the Wal-Mart at their store in the Hull, Quebec, Plateau location. There are now two unionized Wal-Mart stores in Quebec, the other being in St.-Hyacinthe. They also happen to be the only two in North America. There is a reason.
I am worried about the future of Muslims in Western countries, especially since 9/11. A number of news reports point to the phenomenon of a people trying so hard to fit in that they end up losing their self-respect and the respect of others.
Last week the United Arab Emirates, unhappy that Canada refused to provide a number of new landing rights for Emirates Airlines in Dubai and Etihad Airways in Abu Dhabi, forbade Canadian flights to and from Camp Mirage. Canada was already scheduled to leave by November 2.
As the U.S. midterm elections near, President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden have announced, in unison, that Democrats have to stop whining: "We've done so much for you; how can you complain! Look at these Republicans, do you want them ruling over you?"
On 25 September I wrote a piece headlined Obama speaks at the UN… Goodbye to peace. Since then I've seen no need for me to contribute to the debate about the farce that President Obama's push for peace is and was always going to be. But the Arab League's decision to give Obama a one-month deadline to rescue the direct talks between Abbas and his quisling administration and Netanyahu and his deluded coalition government demands a comment or two.
