Now that the Canadian Parliament is back in session, the rebirth of Bill C-6 looms large on the horizon, bringing with it a threat that belies its benign-sounding formal name, "The Canada Consumer Product Safety Act". The bill, pushed hard by the government in its last session, but abandoned when Parliament was prorogued, is due to be reintroduced within weeks.

Beyond the Border, the new program that involves the sharing of personal information between Canada and the US along with efforts to enhance cross-border commerce was announced by Stephen Harper and Barack Obama on December 7. The Arab Spring was attempting to poke its head from under the autocratic cold in sunny Bahrain back in February 2011. Demonstrations broke out in Manama's Pearl Square. Rulers of Bahrain are Sunni, while most Bahrainis are Shi'ite, so of course the charge was that it was all Iranian-inspired. As in the other cases, efforts were made to put the demonstrations down with brute force. Again as elsewhere, the repression was failing. That is, until other forces interfered.
