It is not completely clear as to why we need sleep, but its necessity is. It is something we share with pretty well all of the other members of the animal kingdom. Sleep appears to give the body and brain the opportunity to repair, lessen stress and anxiety, and aid in memory and learning.
Way back in October 2001, a prominent and widely respected liberal London rabbi, Dr. David Goldberg, made what I thought at the time was the most remarkable statement ever made by a Jew in the 53 years that had passed since the creation, mainly by terrorism and ethnic cleansing, of the Zionist (not Jewish) state of Israel. He said that Israel's "colonization" of Palestine had left many Jews "questioning their unconditional support for Israel." Then this: "It may be time for Judaism and Zionism to go their separate ways."
During a meeting at the Dama Rose hotel in Damascus the other morning, this observer was briefed by "Abu Modar," a reputedly battle-honed field commander of the "Death Brigade," a unit based in the northern Syria Eskanderoun region, north of Latakia. Abu Modar explained that he personally had chosen the rather peculiar name for his outfit to symbolize the willingness of its members to die for their cause-protecting Syria.
Western media does not highlight the current genocide against Muslims in the Central African Republic or in Myanmar (Burma).
Press TV has conducted an interview with Edward Corrigan, a human rights attorney, from Ontario, about the situation in occupied Palestine.
Orangutans belong to the order primates, which is the group of animals including monkeys, apes and humans. Since the primates include ourselves and all of our closest relatives, it makes sense if we learn a few things from them.
After years and years of talk about reforming the Senate to make it more relevant to the needs and desires of Canadians, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau is the first to actually do something. In an effort to stop the Senate from being a group of political party hacks and sycophants - pigs at the trough, as Mr. Harper's political mentor Preston Manning used to characterize them promoting the Prime Minister's political agenda, Mr. Trudeau has dismissed all Liberal Senators from the party caucus and called upon Prime Minister Harper to do the same. Notwithstanding the whining from Mr. Harper and his ilk, Preston Manning supported Mr. Trudeau's move by saying, "It's a step in the right direction."
Writing in the Toronto Star, Humera Jabir, a law student, commented on the difference in how French and English media treated the death of Naïma Rhaouity, a Moroccan immigrant who died tragically in the Montreal métro. The exact cause of death is not precisely known, but it appears that either her hijab or some other piece of clothing caught in the escalator mechanism, dragging her down and then catching her hair in the mechanism as well, chocking her to death.
Bill C-24 would give the Conservative government unprecedented authority to strip Canadians of their citizenship. It's not just Omar Khadr who'll be hit.
Inspired perhaps by the fading echoes of George W. Bush; Stephen Harper has presented Canadians with a false choice on Middle East peace: either voice "absolute, non-negotiable belief in Israel" or be declared an anti-Semite. Stephen Harper refuses to be a real friend to the Israelis in the sense that he excuses their more objectionable behaviour for the sake of political support, business deals and misplaced guilt.
